Legacy Continues as Elizabeth Weir Joins Tommies
The St. Thomas University Tommies are excited to welcome Elizabeth Weir as the newest addition to the women’s soccer program ahead of the upcoming season.
Originally from London, Ontario, Weir is a versatile defender who can play both fullback and centre defensive midfield. She developed her game with FC London while attending Catholic Central High School, building a reputation as a fast, determined player who plays with confidence and purpose on the ball.
Weir was drawn to St. Thomas by its academic environment and strong sense of community.
“I chose St. Thomas University for its close-knit campus and the supportive environment it creates for students,” she said. “I plan to study psychology, and the small class sizes at STU will make it easy to ask questions, build strong connections, and really engage with my professors. Continuing to play soccer at a school that values women’s athletics was also incredibly important to me.”
Her decision to become a Tommie also carries personal significance. Weir’s father is a St. Thomas alumni and former member of the men’s hockey program, making the opportunity to wear the Tommies crest especially meaningful.
“My dad had such a positive experience as both a student and athlete at STU,” she added. “That legacy means a lot to me. I’m excited to live and play soccer in the Maritimes, push myself in a new environment, and continue growing both academically and athletically.”
Academically, Weir has a strong interest in psychology, particularly sports psychology, and hopes to pursue a career supporting youth in sport or working in hospital settings.
Outside of soccer, she has been heavily involved in athletics and leadership at her high school. She competed on the cross country and volleyball teams and is a participant in the LEAP Program (Leaders in Exercise and Athletics Program)at Catholic Central, where she developed leadership skills and contributed to her school and community.
She spoke positively about the culture surrounding the STU women’s soccer program.
“The program is supportive and committed to creating an environment where female athletes can succeed,” she said. “Coach David and the staff have been welcoming and genuine from the start, which made it easy for me to see myself here. I’m excited to train hard, compete, and be part of a team that pushes each other every day.”
Coach Itoafa stated, "Elizabeth is a great addition to our program. She’s quick, plays with pace, and isn’t afraid to drive forward with the ball. What really stands out is her compete level and attitude, and those qualities will allow her to make an immediate impact!"
The Tommies look forward to welcoming Weir to Fredericton as the program continues to grow and build toward another competitive season.
