NCAA Division I Experience in Goal: Tommies Sign First Recruit of 2026
The St. Thomas University Tommies are proud to welcome Ashlee Vail as the newest addition to the women’s soccer program for the 2026-2027 season.
Hailing from Fredericton, New Brunswick, Vail joins the Tommies as a goalkeeper, bringing presence, poise, and a competitive edge to the roster. She developed her game through Shattuck St. Mary’s and arrives at STU following time with Stetson University.
“STU stood out to me as a university that understands that learning isn’t one-size-fits-all,” Vail said. “The flexibility to choose my academic path, paired with a supportive and approachable environment, made it the right fit for me.”
Vail is driven both academically and athletically.
Long-term, she hopes to build a career within women’s professional soccer in Canada, not only competing, but also supporting athletes, strengthening culture, and helping advance the women’s game.
Though quiet off the pitch, Vail laughed when describing her game-day personality,
“I’m pretty reserved normally, but once I’m on the field, the switch flips and I get loud. People are usually surprised by that.”
Her connection with the STU Women’s Soccer Program was immediate.“What sets the STU women’s program apart is how real the support is,” she said. “The coaches see the whole player—not just performance, but potential, goals, and life beyond the game. Playing with many of the women over the summer showed me the standard, chemistry, and commitment within the group. STU is a place where I can continue to grow, compete, and fully invest in this next chapter.”
Vail also carries a deep appreciation for the sport and the people who have helped shape her journey. “Soccer has shaped every part of who I am—how I compete, how I handle pressure, and how I show up for the people around me. I’m surrounded by people who believe in me, and I’m fully committed to this opportunity. I’m coming into this program with passion, experience, and a relentless intensity to raise the standard every day. This game built me. Now I’m here to meet the moment.”
Coach Itoafa is excited for Ashlee to join the squad stating, "We’re incredibly excited to welcome Ashlee back to the Collegiate game. She brings a calm presence and a real authority in goal, her ability to collect crosses, command the box, and lead from the back is truly outstanding. She raises the level of everyone around her, and we’re thrilled to have her as part of our program."
The Tommies look forward to welcoming her home to Fredericton as the program continues building toward another strong ACAA season.
