Hurricanes Use Stoppage Time to Get Past Tommies

Fredericton, NB – The Holland College Hurricanes stunned the St. Thomas University Tommies, scoring in the 90^th minute to get a 3-2 victory at Scotiabank Park South.

With the score tied 2-2 the Hurricanes won a free kick about 30 yards out to the left of the Tommies goal. Rachel Green stepped up and sent the kick in and had it careen off the post, off a Tommies defender and into the back of the net.

"We didn't get the result we wanted, and that was definitely disappointing," said Tommies head coach, Michelle DeCourcey. "We just had a few mistakes and they capitalized on them."

Emily Cormier and Jade Stewart got the Hurricanes out to a 2-0 first half lead and things were looking good heading into the break, but Abbey Curwin (Saint John, NB) scored off of a corner kick to bring the Tommies within one goal.

With four minutes left in regulation time, Nikita McCartney (Moncton, NB) won a penalty kick for her team after she was taken down in the box. Second year defender Jessica McWilliams (Tracadie, NB) stepped up and calmly tied the game 2-2.

"When we are facing tougher competition we have no problem stepping up and competing," said DeCourcey after the game. "I thought Holland was a good challenge for us, and something we needed at this point of the season. It was positive to see us come back from a two-goal deficit."

With the victory the Hurricanes take sole possession of first place in the ACAA standings. They will face the UNBSJ Seawolves Sunday at 12:00pm, while the Tommies will host the Dal AC Rams Sunday at the same time.
