STU Tommies Secure Top Defence Talent from Winnipeg
Fredericton, NB - The St. Thomas University women's hockey team is thrilled to announce the addition of a highly skilled defenseman, Katelin Moffatt, from Winnipeg, Manitoba, to the Tommies roster for the 2024-2025 season.
Katelin, who has played for the Winnipeg Ice U18 AAA, brings a wealth of talent and a proven track record to the team. As a two-time Provincial Champion with the Winnipeg Ice (2023 & 2024), Katelin is poised to make a significant impact on the ice. She led the league in points by a defenseman with 6 goals and 14 assists in 27 games, and was named a 1st Team All-Star. Her team finished first in the league during the regular season and then won the provincial Championship, advancing to the Western Championship before falling to the Regina Rebels.
Expressing her enthusiasm for joining the Tommies, Katelin said, “I will bring passion and dedication, along with a positive attitude, desire to improve, and a strong work ethic, to the program.”
When asked why she chose St. Thomas University, Katelin highlighted the welcoming environment, strong academic programs, and the beautiful campus. “St. Thomas offers a community feel that I was looking for. It also gives me the opportunity to move to and see a different part of the country, all while being a part of a great hockey program,” she shared.
Academically, Katelin is interested in pursuing studies in Psychology, further demonstrating her commitment to both athletic and academic excellence.
Reflecting on the STU program and coaching staff, Katelin was impressed by the overall team dynamic and the coaches' dedication. “I was really impressed with everything I saw from the program. All the players and coaches were really welcoming. It felt like they had a great dynamic, which is something I could see myself being a part of as it felt familiar and friendly. The coaches are all very knowledgeable and dedicated to seeing players and the team succeed. I could tell that everyone involved with the program has fostered an environment that will push me to be my best and develop not only as a player, but as a person.”
STU Head Coach Peter Murphy shared his excitement about Katelin joining the team: “Katelin is a player who looks to make a difference when she steps on the ice. She has the ability to help offensively with her strong blue line play and good decision making but is equally tough to play against in her own zone. I was very impressed with her calm demeanour in games and that was reflected in her character and personality when she visited campus. She will be a great addition to our blue line corps heading into the future and we look forward to working with her this fall.”
STU Athletics and the Tommies community are excited to welcome Katelin and look forward to the valuable contributions she will make both on and off the ice. Welcome to the Tommies family, Katelin!
Katelin joins previously announced Tayler Cohen (Richmond, BC), Alexie Palchinski (Cudworth, SK), Tristyn Endicott (Kerrobert, SK) and Megan Kirpatrick (Strathmore, AB) as part of the 2024–25 recruiting class.
