Women’s Basketball Welcomes Transfer Guard from UNB
Fredericton, NB — Tommies are excited to announce the addition of a new recruit to the women’s basketball program: transfer guard Payton Oschypko, originally from Upper Tantallon, Nova Scotia.
Payton joins the Tommies after completing her first year of eligibility with the University of New Brunswick’s women’s basketball team in Fredericton. With experience at the U SPORTS level , she’s ready to make an impact at STU.
"I'm excited to bring my athleticism, work ethic, and strong defensive tendencies to the program," said Payton. "I also enjoy playing quick in transition, which I know is a key part of the Tommies program."
A standout at Bayview High School and with the Thunder Selects Elite U16 and U17 programs, Payton brings a strong basketball IQ and competitive mindset to the court. Her decision to transfer was driven by a connection to both the university and the city.
"I chose STU because of the campus and how much I enjoy the Fredericton community," she said.
Off the court, Payton will be pursuing a degree in business with a focus on social entrepreneurship and nonprofit management and hopes to specialize in marketing in the future.
Tommies head coach Fred Connors is looking forward to adding her energy and drive to the roster. "We are very excited to have Payton join our program. She is very athletic and defends with a lot of tenacity. I think she is going to add to our depth and allow us to play at a faster pace this coming season. She is a wonderful person who will be an immediate culture fit. When the rest of the players heard she was coming, they were all very excited".
"I’m really excited to get on the court with the team and help make an impact," Payton said. "I’m also very excited to be coached by Fred. He’s a very positive coach and I can’t wait to learn from him to help grow my game and utilize my talents to my full potential."
